We’ve all seen them lurking, creeping, hiding in the corners. Holding their little scanners in their hands keeping a close eye on those parking meters. And if that meter expires for more than a second you can bet they’ll be giving you a freshly printed ticket.

Side note: You’re allowed to park in a spot with a broken parking meter for one hour in New York City

Traffic agents have an extremely high quota so they quickly scurry about and scan the registration stickers on cars. This allows them to write multiple tickets in a short amount of time.

Traffic agents can be extremely unfair sometimes.

If you do happen to find your car being scanned don’t try to drive away, get out of your car, or cover your registration sticker from being scanned. This is known as “Obstructing governmental administration” and is a class “a” misdemeanor in the state of New York.  According to the New York State Penal Law…

“A person is guilty of obstructing governmental administration when he intentionally obstructs, impairs or perverts the administration of law or other governmental function or prevents or attempts to prevent a public servant from performing an official function, by means of intimidation, physical force or interference, or by means of any independently unlawful act, or by means of interfering, whether or not physical force is involved, with radio, telephone, television or other telecommunications systems owned or operated by the state, or a county, city, town, village, fire district or emergency medical service or by means of releasing a dangerous animal under circumstances evincing the actor`s intent that the animal obstruct governmental administration.

If the traffic agent feels threatened enough, they will call the police. The police have to arrest you if the traffic agent wants them to. Remember, they can have you arrested for feeling threatened. They can say you got too close to them, you verbally threatened them, anything from preventing them from doing their “official function.” And remember, they’re official function is to write a shitload of tickets.

The only thing you can do to possible prevent getting a ticket is to start talking to them. Try to distract them by talking. All you can really do is talk so they don’t scan your registration sticker. Once they scan your sticker, it’s a done deal. The ticket is recorded in a computer and cannot be removed.

If you do get a ticket, take it and keep quiet. No amount of kicking, begging or screaming will get rid of it. It will only get you arrested in addition to your parking ticket. Remember, if the police are called the traffic agents will be able to imbelish their story to get you arrested. Just bite your tongue. There are multiple ways you can fight the ticket later on. Parking tickets are generally reduced if contested since there are so many of them written in New York on a daily basis.
